... for the little warriors

It's official ~~~ TGK is an official charitable organization!!!

In case you've noticed my sidebar link to The General's Kids ...

This is our daughter's organization that gives back to our military kids serve our country alongside of their wounded parent.  Our own little warriors -- Lucy at age 3 and Tag at 11 days old -- had their lives turned upside in a split second from "the phone call" that their Daddy had been wounded in an explosion overseas.  Tag will never remember anything from that traumatic time, but sweet Lucy remembers everything.

Some people say that she will forget certain things, but such a trauma to a young child's life leaves an everlasting mark ...
I know because I experienced such a trauma as well at about age 4 {I will fill in details in another post}.

To this day, Lucy will say things like
"Nanny, do you remember Miss ___ from that time Daddy was at Walter Reed?"
or
"____ has 4 prosthetics because he was in an explosion too."
{Yes, at the tender age of 3 Lucy could explain how prosthetics work & help those who have no arms or legs function.}

Some "little warriors" live at military hospitals - medical centers - for the duration of their hero's treatment/recovery/rehabilitation period.  The General's Kids wants to help give our little heroes an encouragement and support system to let them know that THEY are our heroes too. They serve our country alongside their wounded hero and their whole family.

they sacrifice and they are dedicated ...
they serve and they are patriotic ...
they love our country and they support our American Flag ...

These little warriors are our nation's heroes.

Here's a little introductory excerpt from The General's Kids website ...

About Us
The General's Kids, L.L.C. was designed for our nation's little warriors. Whether they are infants or teenagers, facing the life-changing injury or illness of a parent leaves a lasting impression. There are so many wonderful organizations out there that benefit wounded warriors and their families, and children often benefit from these. But at The General's Kids we are proud to focus 100% on the children and young siblings of the wounded, ill, and injured. We can help connect children and teenagers of various ages with others across the country who are going through similar struggles, provide sponsors who will send encouraging cards or care packages, and will soon be able to offer financial assistance for things like special interests or school funding. Children living the Wounded Warrior life are faced with a harsh sense of reality. We intend to help bring back some of the things that help comfort and lighten these kids' hearts. Our goals are big and extend all the way up to wanting to fund Disney vacations and college scholarships. Our belief is that whether there are 10,000 wounded warrior kids or just one, each and every one is a priority and deserves to have their sacrifice for our freedom acknowledged. Learn more about how you can help...

So ...

this is basically "who we are" at The General's Kids.
We hope you visit our website ... and please remember our little warriors in your prayers.
Lucy & Tag are just 2 little warriors out of so many others. Our family is dedicated to helping other little warriors adjust to their wounded warrior life ... because we have been there and are still traveling this journey.  And this journey will continue throughout the lives of our own little warriors.  I'm sure it's Mrs. 'Joes desire as it is ours ... that our future generations will continue the work of The General's Kids to ensure that all little warriors know how important they are and how much they are cared for.

And to know that someone has walked their path before them.

May God bless you & your family

may God bless our wounded warrior families

and may God bless our little warriors

What I Don't Do Often Enough

I think anybody who has read my blog knows how much this Granny loves to brag and show-off her grandchildren!  Lucy & Tag are just simply awesome ... and as with most grandparents, I tend to go on & on about them.  And that's a good thing ---
these generations of grandkids have earned their "grand" in our eyes!

Yet ...
before Lucy & Tag ...
before "grands" ...
before our 2nd anniversary ...

there's our daughter
Jacqueline

Her "Boot Shoot" while 'Joe was in Iraq

I don't often say anything about her,
but this Mommy is going to brag on her daughter ...

she became a "war-bride" at the age of 19
(when she married her best friend on Christmas Eve 2005) ...
she spent the first year of their marriage without him
(he deployed to Iraq within a couple of weeks of their wedding) ...

8 1/2 years from their wedding day

she gave birth to Lucy while 'Joe was on the road from his duty station about 9 hours away from home
(he pretty much was gone throughout the pregnancy too) ...
she gave birth to Tag when 'Joe was deployed to Afghanistan
(just 11 short days before he was wounded in action) ...

Long distance call from Afghanistan just hours after Tag was born
she lived 5 months at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center with a wounded husband, newborn son &
3 1/2 year old Lucy
(Lucy stayed with us part-time as well) ...
she founded the non-profit organization The General's Kids as a means to give back to our nation's little warriors as they live at military hospitals with their heroes
(her own children are the inspiration of TGK) ...

TGK at AUSA in Washington, DC

she advocated for the 2 years following 'Joe's release from WR for his medical treatments that she knew was necessary in his recovery & rehabilitation
(many times to have doors shut closed on her but she never gave up) ...
she keeps track of 'Joe's medical appointments, medicine schedules and therapies
(so she is basically his non-medical assistant) ...

Walter Reed family reunion just a week after 'Joe was WIA.

she will begin homeschooling Lucy in just a few days for Kindergarten
(she coordinates Lucy's log-ins, instructional videos & assignments through the online program) ...
she is Tag's best friend and comforter
(he is very attached to his Mommy) ...

Tag is his Mommy's protector.

she finds time to call her Grandma & Grandpa no matter how busy her day
(she shares a special relationship with my parents since she was born) ...
she taught herself to crochet within a few days time
(as much as I wanted to teach her when she was younger, she had actually taught herself to knit during that time) ...

Just a few of her projects as she was "learning" to crochet.
  she quilts
(has projects lined up for Lucy & Tag's "keepsake" clothing) ...
she paints, she writes
(unpublished books are waiting in the wings) ...

Both our girls benefit from art therapy.
she cooks, she creates, she sews
she's a photographer, she's a designer

she is the glue that holds her family together

Making a snow day as normal as possible for Lucy just after she received word of the explosion.

But ...
it's not because of all she does that makes me proud of her ...
it's because of who she is ...

she is a God-chaser ...
she lives her life in the center of His will ...
she allows Him to be her guide throughout anything life brings ...

She is mine & Dan's one and only child ...
We are so proud of her and thankful that God chose us to be her parents.

We've walked alongside our daughter & her family through many circumstances.  Although we may not know exactly what she goes through in their journey, please say special prayers for her & her family -- as well as all of our military families & our wounded warrior families.  Each member brings a unique sacrifice as they serve our country as a family.  Spouses waiting on phone calls yet dreading "that" call -- but holding their breath to make it to the end of the day without "that" visit to inform them ...
Children not completely understanding "why" their parent (or both) are away from home -- but these kids teach us about true patriotism to our country.

Little did this young bride know the journey that was ahead.

Our daughter is our hero ...
when God gave her to us --
our family was complete.

So, this Mommy may not brag about her daughter as often as I should but ...

my daughter is an awesome young lady!

The General's Kids ... for our little warriors

This week has been an extremely hectic week in our household. On Tuesday, just before the strike of midnight
The General's Kids, LLC  (CLICK HERE)
was launched.  We are so excited for our daughter & her family! This is her project & her company ... birthed in the moment when "the phone call" came through one year ago.  It really doesn't seem like it's been a whole year since Joe's injuries.  God has been faithful & He has blessed each one of us traveling on this wounded warrior journey.  (By the way, we just celebrated 'Joes first Alive Day ... God is good!)

The launch date was specifically chosen as February 19th ...  "the day before life changed".

On the morning of February 20, 2012 (which was also Joe's birthday) Mrs. Joe was lying in bed with newborn Tag (just 11 days old) by her side. I had Lucy downstairs doing our morning routine when our daughter's cell phone rang ...
'Joe's command calling to inform her that his base had come under attack in Afghanistan & he was injured ...  shattered jaw with shrapnel debris, deep leg wounds from the shrapnel, Purple Heart medal, will be enroute to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for more surgeries ...
And so the life of the wounded warrior family began.

To read from her own words prior to launching The General's Kids, here's the link to
Mrs. Joe's blog ACUs, Stiletto Shoes and Pretty Pink Tutus ...

She would love to hear from some of my friends & I know she would love some encouragement too. Her Daddy & I are so proud of her steadfast faith in God to lead her family through this process.

So, enough from her Mommy, now ...

About Our Founder

Please stop by The General's Kids website (CLICK HERE) and take a look around. Grandad & I are so proud of our daughter & her family giving back & having a heart for our wounded warrior kids.  These little ones serve our country in ways that we will never imagine.  I still wonder at times what goes through Lucy's mind as she still processes her Daddy's injuries & how life has changed since then.
She's my hero & there are many other children who are going through the same life-changing event. We will never be able to thank these children enough, but maybe we can help give them a little sense of normalcy as they travel their own wounded warrior path with their parents.
